Climbing Again

Me and Viola

It's been a while since I've been climbing. I started when I was about 12 or 13 in Germany. GabeB started climbing with me for a hile, but I haven't really been since I broke my ankle a few years ago. Mainly because GabeB said he didn't really like it anymore. And I feel safer climbing with 2 people rather than 1.

All is not lost though. I ran into an old school mate Viola in Feb. by chance in Utrecht, and she had just gotten back from a 3 month climbing and hiking trip through Asia. We went for a couple of drinks and she was amazed to hear that I love the outdoors and love climbing. It was inspiring to hear her stories and we've been trying to go climbing since. Last week we did, and it was great fun! It's great to have a climbing partner again. Like Viola said everyone our age is a couple and it's cool to find someone as a climbing partner. And I have to say she is a better climber than me. In any case I got to get my climbing gear out again, and feel not so jealous of my buddy Rupert going to Turkey climbing for his vacation. So time willing I'll be doing more climbing now which is a nice supplement to the weekly yoga I'm doing. And I have to say it's getting me

back in shape. Since January I've lost about 15 kilos and reduced my body fat down to 13%. Mainly by diet, lots of going out and yoga.

I hope this inspires you to get out this summer and start doing some activities and enjoying nature again, if you don't already. If you want some more inspiration have a look at this video from Rupert that he posted about his climbing tour in Turkey. Rupert, let's go climbing together soon mate!

Exposure 08 roundup

It was very cool to goto the North last week to give a small workshop in Video Blogging. I saw some old students, met some new ones, and even got some alocoholic beverage which I can only describe as watered down jet fuel. Because I went through the whole process and introduction less than an hour, I flew through the sites as examples and tools that I like to use. I promised everyone I would add it here, so I made a PDF of the keynote project (so no films, but the links are there) so everyone could browse through afterwards. Now I'm gonna start working on my Socail Gaming and Theater presentations. ;-)

thnks fr th mmmrs

GabeB told me I should make something creative to purge the demons of my breakup with Tamara. So I decided to make this compilation film of photos and videos from our last 4 years together. Of course not everything is in here, there is so much on the net, but it was very good to do and reminded me of the good times. So thanks for the memories, and the lessons I have learned. Be kind in this purging of my soul.

Twitter dating First date archive

A little over a week ago I was at the Next Web conference. There I saw a girl that I knew online, but not offline. Marlooz (Marloes Veldhuizen). No for those of you who haven't been following the twitters of me of late, we've been having a true web 2.0 dating affair. I will take you through it all now... So I think the best start is a video which Marlooz posted about it to explain how it started.

Rotterdam Event writeup

Last Month I did some moderation for an event at the International Rotterdam Film Festival here in Holland. There is a write-up in independent magazine about it. Have a look!

Blogging Rotterdam, Part Five: Understanding Europe's Zeal for Media Literacy

The Independent's

Randi Cecchine, a filmmaker and educator from New York City, is impressed to learn that governments in Europe are eager to come up with policies to promote media literacy among their citizens, particularly young people. But as a European friend suggests, the role of the government in establishing guidelines concerning media literacy and education can be complicated—especially if media makers are cut out of the policy-making loop.

Via: Randi Cecchine on www.independent-magazine.org

Here is my quoted excerpt (for family to be proud) the rest you should really read if you are interested in this stuff.

Gabriel McIntyre (I'll call him Gabemac) was the charming conference moderator. I found it interesting that they chose an American to lead the discussion. Gabriel is originally from Atlanta, but has lived in the Netherlands for many years, working as an educator and with emerging technology and advertising. He helped me understand the European media literacy context a little more clearly, reminding me that most media is funded by the government, and that historically media has often been used for propaganda for pretty bad purposes. The notion is that if the government has such a large role in creating the media, it also has a responsibility to enhance the cultural undersanding of media.

I ask Gabe what he thinks comes out of events like this.

“Policymakers make policy. It's up to artists to take the policy and make it right. That’s always how it is, in any democratic society. And if they didn’t make right policies, the artists wouldn’t take it up. Or they would say, you screwed up there—this is better.
