One annoying thing about going out in Amsterdam now is you cannot smoke inside. Also for non smokers, everyone is outside you want to talk to. And of course you cannot take your glass out with you either. So you stnad next to a smoker who is holding his or her drink in the door. I mean we might as well just stay home. Another thing is
People seem to stink more now because there is mo smoke to hide the aromas of sweat or bad hairspray. No fun. I’ll stay in Spain for a bit longer I think till it is sorted out.

Hmmm, that’s a different way to look at it. In Oklahoma (the US left it up to individual states to decide), bars can choose to be entirely smoking instead of having nonsmoking areas. The smoking bars have to be very well ventilated (although most are not) and completely separate of nonsmoking areas.
I think all bars have to be nonsmoking by some time in 2009. I think it’s wrong for legislators to choose for citizens and businesses. I am a nonsmoker, and if I don’t feel like being in a smoking environment, then I go to a nonsmoking bar, or vice versa. These lawmakers don’t even visit the bars that they legislate for. Bullshit I say.
hey Nick,
I agree that non smokers have rights as well. I really think that bars should have smoking and non smoking sections with good ventilation set up. Many bars can do this easily, but not all bars in Holland can unfortunately. Espically for the people who work there it is better, but the culture of going out, espically in Europe, is so synonimous with smoking that this change is not gradual enough to combat the cultural norms. So what is happening is now there are problems with too many people being on the street, neighbors complaining, glass being dropped outside and bikes getting flat tires. I mean because it is so drastic NOWHERE inside can be smoking, the culture is still trying to adapt, and they’ve put so many other laws in place before hand, like people standing outside of bars, etc. that the clash is to great. It’s a shame really, but I think it’s the last straw in the Night life of Amsterdam. It was nice while it lasted, but the government has done a great job in killing it.
